Berlin paving contractor
Yes, we pave all over Berlin
Berlin is one of the oldest towns in Worcester County and it still looks it. The centre is a compact historic district of nineteenth century brick and frame buildings, laid out long before anybody needed room for a delivery truck, and the streets around it were built to match. US 113 runs past on one side and US 50 crosses just to the north, which is what puts the town within easy reach of both the beach traffic and the farms inland.
That mix is why Berlin work splits so cleanly in two. There are tight town drives behind old houses, and there are wide open properties out along the county roads. They are different jobs and we plan them differently. The family paving contractor out of Federalsburg that does both has been working this part of the Shore for three generations.
What makes a Berlin job different
The water is the first thing. Berlin sits on flat coastal plain a few miles inland of the Atlantic, the water table is close to the surface, and the ground holds wet longer than people expect after a storm. Pave over ground like that without digging the soft material out and the new surface will dish and crack inside a couple of winters. On Berlin jobs we spend real time below the asphalt before we spend any on top of it.
The second thing is access. In the old part of town the drives are short, the gates are narrow, and there is a neighbour's lawn a few feet away on both sides. We bring smaller equipment to those jobs on purpose, and we plan how material gets in and old surface gets out before the first truck arrives. Out past the town line it flips completely: long lanes, open fields, wide shoulders and room to work, which is its own set of decisions about drainage and edge support.
What we handle here
What we build in Berlin
Driveway Paving
The common Berlin call is an older home with a drive that has been patched more than once, or a newer place out of town with a long approach that has never been done properly. Either way we take the soft ground out, build a stone base, set the fall and lay hot mix with a real crown on it. Our driveway paving in Berlin is sized to the site, from thirty feet to a town garage to three hundred out on a county road.
Sealcoating
This close to the coast, sun, salt air and the freeze and thaw of a Shore winter all pull at the binder that holds asphalt together. A seal coat puts that protection back, keeps the surface black and stops water working into the small cracks before they open up. Our sealcoating around Berlin goes on home driveways and business lots alike, usually every few years.
Parking Lot Paving
Berlin has a working downtown, churches, offices and small business parks out toward the highways, and all of them park real traffic. A lot takes a deeper base and a heavier mat than a driveway because delivery trucks turn on it every day. We build the lanes and entrances stronger than the stalls, phase the work so the doors stay open, and stripe it once the surface has cured.
Driveway Resurfacing
Plenty of Berlin drives have a base that is still perfectly sound under a surface that has gone grey and started to ravel. Where the base holds, a new wearing course over the top gives you a new looking driveway for a fraction of a full rebuild. We dig and check first, because resurfacing only works when what is underneath has not failed.
Why Berlin calls us
Why Berlin property owners call Robert and Son
Because we are a local outfit, not a crew that follows the season down the coast and disappears. Robert and Son Paving is in its third generation, run out of Federalsburg, and Bob was born and raised on the Eastern Shore. When you call, you get the man whose name is on the truck rather than a call center somewhere else.
We are licensed in Maryland under MHIC #74385, we have been BBB A plus accredited since 2018, and every job we do carries a two year warranty. Estimates are free, we work Monday through Saturday from seven in the morning to seven at night, and we take on residential and commercial work both. If what your drive actually needs is a repair instead of a new surface, we will tell you that.
Where you will see us around Berlin
US 113 and US 50 are our roads in, and most of our Berlin work sits within a few minutes of one or the other. From there we are on the old town streets around the historic district, out along MD 376 toward the Assateague side, and west on MD 346 and the county roads that run back toward the farms.
Out past the town limits it is a different kind of job again, with long private lanes, open ground and plenty of room for water to go wrong if the falls are not set properly. We work both, and when winter turns the same trucks come back down for snow removal on commercial property.
Where we work
Driveways and lots we lay in Berlin
We cover Berlin and the surrounding Worcester County countryside, and we are on the same run for our Ocean Pines customers just up the road and for the jobs we have in Salisbury back west along US 50.

Straight answers about asphalt paving on the Eastern Shore
Do you really travel to Berlin from Federalsburg?
We do, regularly. It is a straight enough run south east on MD 313 and then east on US 50, and there is no travel charge to come down, look at your job and give you a free estimate.
Can you get equipment into a narrow Berlin town driveway?
Usually yes. We look at the access first and bring smaller equipment when the street or the gate needs it. If a site genuinely cannot be worked safely, we tell you that up front instead of starting and stopping.
Does wet ground near Berlin cause driveway problems?
It is the single biggest cause of failure down there. The water table sits close to the surface, so we dig the soft material out and set the falls first, rather than paving over ground that holds water after every storm.
Do you do commercial parking lots in Berlin?
Yes. Shops, offices, churches and small business parks, residential and commercial both. Lots get a heavier build than driveways because of truck traffic, and we phase the work so the business can keep trading.
How long does a new asphalt driveway take?
Most homes are a one or two day job once we are on site, longer where there is heavy base repair or drainage work to do. Weather moves it, because we will not lay asphalt onto wet or frozen ground.
Are you licensed to work in Worcester County?
Yes. We hold Maryland Home Improvement Commission licence number 74385, we have been BBB A plus accredited since 2018, and every job we finish carries a two year warranty.
