Easton has been the seat of Talbot County since the act that built the courthouse there in 1710, and by 1810 it was the largest town on the whole Eastern Shore. You can still read that history in the streets. The Easton Historic District covers about 232 acres and close to 900 buildings, and most of them went up in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with around fifty from the early 1800s and a handful older than that.
Old streets mean short drives, tight turns, mature trees and neighbours close on both sides. That is a different job from a wide open lane out in the county, and it is the kind of work we plan before the truck ever pulls in. Two things. The first is access. Downtown Easton streets around Washington, Goldsborough, Dover and Aurora were laid out long before anyone owned a dump truck, so the drives are short, the gates are narrow and half the job is getting material in and old surface out without tearing up a neighbour's lawn. The second is the ground. Easton sits about twenty three feet above sea level near the Tred Avon River, on flat coastal plain soil. Some of it is well drained Sassafras type sand and loam, the soil Maryland named as its state soil, and some of it is the flat, poorly drained kind that holds water inches below the surface after a wet week. You cannot tell which one you have by looking at the grass. We dig it, we look at it, and we set the fall so the water leaves before we talk about surface, which is why driveway grading is a real line on a lot of our Easton estimates.

Do you really travel to Easton from Federalsburg?
Every week. It is about seventeen miles, out MD 318 to MD 16 and then MD 331 over the Dover Bridge. There is no travel charge to come and look at your job and give you an estimate.
Can you get equipment into a narrow Easton historic district driveway?
Usually yes. We look at the access first and bring smaller equipment when the street or the gate calls for it. If a site genuinely cannot be worked safely we will tell you that up front instead of starting and stopping.
