The road between our towns is one of the oldest paved highways in the state. MD 307 runs just over six miles from Federalsburg to Hurlock and was one of the first highways the Maryland State Roads Commission completed, back in 1910. The rail line between the two towns is still in use too, and once a year the Hurlock Express carries people down it to Federalsburg and back during the Fall Festival.
So Hurlock is not a place we visit, it is part of our daily run. Town driveways, industrial yards, church lots and farm lanes, we do all of it here. The paving company down the road in Federalsburg has been working this stretch of Dorchester County for three generations.
Hurlock pavement carries real weight
Hurlock became the industrial and commercial hub of northern Dorchester County after the Delaware Railroad put a station here in 1867 and the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic line crossed it in 1890. The town motto is on track since 1892 for a reason. In 1987 the town opened a fully serviced ninety seven acre industrial park, and it was made a state enterprise zone in 1989. Food and poultry businesses, trucking and manufacturing operate out of it today.
That changes what pavement has to do. A yard where loaded tractor trailers turn, back up and sit under load is not a driveway with extra square footage. It needs a deeper stone base, a thicker mat, and drainage that keeps water out from underneath, because a soft subgrade under a trailer wheel is where a yard starts falling apart. We build commercial surfaces for the vehicles that actually use them, then finish with parking lot striping so traffic goes where you want it.
