Stevensville paving contractor

Yes, we cross the island to Stevensville

Stevensville was founded in 1850 as a steamboat terminal, and its historic district still holds about a hundred structures across forty five acres along East Main Street and Love Point Road, including the Cray House from before 1850, Christ Church from 1880 and the 1902 train depot. Then the Chesapeake Bay Bridge opened in 1952, Stevensville became the eastern end of it, and Kent Island has been growing ever since. The population went from 6,803 in 2010 to 7,442 in 2020.

We come up MD 313 to Denton, west on MD 404 and out US 50, which is about thirty six miles. Old village lots, waterfront homes and commuter subdivisions all need different things from a driveway, and our Eastern Shore paving crew has been building on this ground for three generations.

Kent Island ground is the hardest test

Stevensville sits about six and a half feet above sea level, surrounded by tidal water. Queen Anne's County's own planning work describes low lying topography, high seasonal water tables, poor drainage and high runoff across this area, and the county is planning for up to two feet of sea level rise by 2050. Southern Kent Island has a public sewer project underway precisely because groundwater sits so close to the surface that septic systems have been failing.

Pavement on ground like that has no margin for a lazy base. Water under asphalt is what turns a small crack into a broken edge over one winter, so the base has to be open and free draining and the surface has to shed water fast rather than pond it. Salt air works on the surface from above at the same time. Getting the shape right is half the job, which is why driveway grading comes before any talk of a surface on this island.

What we handle here

What we build in Stevensville

Driveway Paving

Island driveways need a deeper, cleaner stone base than most inland jobs because the water table is so close. We excavate, build the base so it drains, crown the surface and finish the edges so the lawn does not creep in. Our driveway paving in Stevensville is built for the ground it sits on, not to a template.

Sealcoating

Sun off the Bay, salt in the air and winter freeze all attack the binder that holds a surface together. A seal coat is the cheapest protection there is, and on Kent Island it earns its keep faster than almost anywhere we work. Our sealcoating on Kent Island keeps island drives and lots black and sealed.

Asphalt Repair

On soft, wet ground, failures usually start at the edges and at any low spot that ponds. We cut the failed area out, deal with the wet base underneath and patch it back so the repair does not sink with the next wet season. Our asphalt repair in Stevensville treats the cause, not the symptom.

Parking Lot Paving

Kent Island commercial lots take commuter traffic in the morning, trailers and boats at the weekend and delivery trucks in between. We build the base for the heaviest of those and set the falls to real outlets. Our parking lot paving in Stevensville covers shops, offices and community lots around the island.

Why Stevensville calls us

Why Kent Island owners call Robert and Son

Because Eastern Shore ground is all we have ever worked. Robert and Son Paving has been going for three generations, we are the third generation, and Bob was born and raised here. Wet subgrade, tidal ground and salt are not surprises to us, and the crew that quotes your job is the crew that builds it.

Maryland Home Improvement Commission licence 74385, BBB A plus accredited since 2018, and a two year warranty on all work, residential and commercial. Estimates are free. If your drive is still sound underneath but tired on top, our driveway resurfacing will give you a new surface without the cost of starting over.

Where you will see us around Stevensville

US 50 and US 301 bring us onto the island right at Stevensville, and MD 18 and MD 8 carry us through the neighbourhoods from there. The historic streets around East Main and Love Point Road are tight and old, while the subdivisions south and east of them are newer, laid out for commuters who cross the Bay Bridge each morning.

Closer to the water, driveways serve homes with boats, trailers and heavier vehicles than a standard suburban drive ever sees, and the ground under them is at its wettest. When cracks open on those, our asphalt crack sealing keeps water out of a base that already has enough to deal with.

Where we work

Driveways and lots we lay in Stevensville

We cover Stevensville and the rest of Kent Island, including Chester at Kent Narrows, and we work the upper Shore around Sudlersville and MD 300 on the same trip north.

Ask a paving contractor

Straight answers about asphalt paving on the Eastern Shore

Do you really come out to Stevensville and Kent Island?

Yes. It is about thirty six miles from Federalsburg, up MD 313 to Denton, west on MD 404 and out US 50. Queen Anne’s County is one of the counties we have served for years and the estimate is free.

Can asphalt work on ground with a high water table?

Yes, if the base is built for it. The base has to drain freely and the surface has to shed water fast. What fails on the island is pavement laid on a shallow base over wet ground.

Does salt air really affect a Stevensville driveway?

It works on the surface along with sun and freeze, drying out the binder that holds the asphalt together. That is why sealcoating pays for itself quicker here than it does inland.

Will my Stevensville driveway take a boat trailer?

It will if we build it to. Tell us what you park and tow before we quote. Trailer tongues and jack stands concentrate weight in small areas, so the base matters more than the surface thickness.

Do you handle HOA community parking areas in Stevensville?

Yes, residential and commercial both. Community lots, shared driveways and shop parking. We can also stripe them once the surface is down.

Are you licensed in Maryland?

Yes, MHIC number 74385. We have been BBB A plus accredited since 2018, we have been in business for three generations, and every job carries a two year warranty.
