Asphalt repair

Fix the cause, not just the hole

A repair that lasts starts with one question. Is the surface worn out, or has the base under it given up? Get that wrong and you pay twice, because new asphalt laid over soft ground fails the same way in the same spot.

Robert and Son Paving has repaired driveways, farm lanes and commercial lots on the Eastern Shore for three generations. Third generation, MHIC #74385, residential and commercial, with a two year warranty on the work.

We work out of Federalsburg and repair asphalt right across Dorchester and Caroline counties, including the lots and lanes in and around Cambridge.

Surface failure or base failure?

Surface failure looks like grey, rough asphalt that sheds stone, or single straight cracks running with the lay of the pavement. The ground under it is still solid, so a patch or an overlay takes care of it. Base failure looks different. You get cracks in tight interlocking blocks, like alligator skin, and the area feels soft or rocks under a truck tyre. That means water has got into the stone base and the ground is moving. Skim over it and you are throwing asphalt away, so our paving crew in Federalsburg digs those areas out full depth and rebuilds what is underneath.

How does a saw cut and patch work?

We mark the failed area and cut it square, back past the damage into pavement that is still sound, usually about a foot beyond the last crack. The broken asphalt comes out and the base gets checked. Soft stone comes out too and is replaced with clean stone, compacted in layers. The vertical edges get a tack coat so the new mix bonds to the old, then hot mix goes in and is rolled in lifts rather than one deep dump. Compacting in lifts is how a patch gets real density, which the National Asphalt Pavement Association has been saying for as long as we have been laying it.

When is an overlay the right call?

An overlay is a new layer of asphalt laid over the old surface, usually an inch and a half thick once it is rolled. It works when the base is sound and the surface is simply worn, oxidised or full of small cracks. It does not work where the pavement is pumping water, holding puddles or breaking up along the edges. We patch the bad areas first, fill what is left, then lay the overlay so it has something solid to bond to. If the surface only has scattered cracks and is otherwise sound, sealing those cracks is the cheaper answer and it buys years.

What breaks asphalt up around here?

Water, and the freeze and thaw that follows it. The Eastern Shore gets wet winters with the temperature swinging back and forth over freezing. Water sits in a crack or a low spot, freezes, expands and lifts the pavement a fraction. Do that a hundred times and the surface lets go. Drainage matters as much as the mix. A lot that ponds after every storm keeps failing in the same corner until the grade or the inlet is sorted out, and that is part of what we look at when we quote. We repair asphalt across Caroline County, including the farm lanes out around Preston.

Straight answers about asphalt paving on the Eastern Shore

Can you repair just one section of my driveway?

Yes, and it is often the smart move. We cut out the failed area, rebuild what sits under it and patch back to sound pavement, which costs a fraction of replacing a driveway that is otherwise fine.

How long does an asphalt patch take to cure?

You can usually drive on hot mix once it has cooled, which is a few hours. It keeps hardening for weeks, so avoid parking in one spot or turning your wheels while standing still early on.

Will a patch match the rest of my driveway?

It will be darker at first, because it is new asphalt. The colour evens out over a season as the surface weathers, and sealcoating the whole driveway afterwards blends it in for good.

Is it cheaper to patch or to repave?

Patching wins while the damage sits in pockets and the base is sound. Once failures cover a big share of the surface you are buying patches every year, and rebuilding costs less over time.

Do you repair farm lanes and long driveways?

We do. Long rural lanes are everyday work for us on the Shore. Where a lane has gone soft we dig it out and rebuild the base under it before any new asphalt goes down.

Do you work on commercial property?

Yes, residential and commercial. Business lots, church lots and apartment drives get the same full depth repair, and we schedule around your hours so the entrance stays usable.
