Stone that stays where you put it
Most gravel driveway problems trace back to one thing: the stone was dumped on dirt. With nothing to separate the two, every rain and every truck presses the stone down into the soft ground, and within a year you are buying more stone to replace stone that is still there, just buried.
We build them in layers instead. Geotextile fabric over the subgrade, a coarse base stone rolled in lifts, then a finer top course that binds and packs tight under traffic. Done that way a stone drive carries real weight and only needs topping up occasionally.
Shape matters as much as depth. The surface has to shed water off both sides. Where somebody wants a bound finish that still reads as stone, we lay a sprayed and chipped surface instead.
What goes under a gravel driveway?
Fabric first. A layer of geotextile between the ground and the stone stops the two from mixing, which is what keeps a driveway from sinking into wet Shore ground. It is a cheap material that doubles the working life of everything above it.
Then base stone, four to six inches of it for a normal drive and more where trucks or equipment run, spread and compacted in lifts rather than in one deep dump. The top course is a smaller crushed stone with fines in it, because the fines are what let the surface lock together instead of rolling under your tires. That layered approach sits under every job that leaves our yard, stone or asphalt.
Why does the crown matter so much here?
The Eastern Shore is flat and the water table is high, so water does not run away on its own. It has to be pushed. A driveway built with a crown down the middle, about a quarter inch of fall per foot toward each side, sheds rain off the surface before it can soak in and soften the base.
A flat or dished driveway does the opposite. It holds water down the centre, turns to soup under traffic and potholes in the same spots every winter. On long lanes we open up the ditch lines and set the outfall so the water has somewhere to go once it leaves the stone. We build them that way on farms right down through the county. That is a common and sensible plan. A properly built stone driveway is a finished driveway on its own, and it is also the exact base a hot mix surface needs later. Build it right once and the money is not wasted when you decide to pave.
The one thing to get right up front is depth and compaction, because those are hard to add later. Tell us if paving is in your plans and we will build the base to that standard now. When you are ready, the same crew comes back and lays the asphalt. If the lane has lost its shape in the meantime, bringing the shape back comes first.

What kind of stone should a driveway have on top?
A crushed stone with fines in it, because the fines pack and bind the surface together. Clean round stone with no fines never locks up, so it rolls under tires and pushes to the edges. We pick the top course to suit the traffic your drive carries.
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
Four to six inches of compacted stone over fabric suits most home driveways. Lanes that take grain trucks, equipment or delivery vehicles need more, laid in lifts and rolled. Depth without compaction does not help, so both matter.
How do I stop my gravel driveway from washing out?
Give the water somewhere to go. A crowned surface sheds rain off both sides, and open ditch lines carry it away from the driveway. Most washouts we are called to are on flat or dished lanes where water ran down the middle instead of off the sides.
How often does a stone driveway need more gravel?
A driveway built on fabric with a real base only needs occasional topping up, mostly in the turn in from the road and anywhere vehicles brake or turn. A driveway laid straight on dirt needs stone constantly, which is the cost people usually miss.
Can you fix my existing gravel driveway instead of rebuilding?
Often yes. If there is still stone there, we can regrade it, re-establish the crown, fill the low spots and add a new top course. We only rebuild from the subgrade when the stone has disappeared into the ground or the drive holds water everywhere.
Do you install gravel driveways outside Federalsburg?
